Deeper into the Montafon with every step

Depth on two wheels - get to know the Montafon and its history.

Montafon Mining Museum in Silbertal

The first stop is the Montafon Mining Museum in Silbertal. This is where the search for traces of a time when the valley was shaped by mining - economically, socially and culturally. In the Montafon community of Silbertal, you can see the harsh conditions under which copper and iron were once mined. Interactive stations, historical tools and original documents convey an impressive picture of Montafon's mining history - and show how closely it was linked to the realities of people's lives.

St. Agatha Chapel on the Kristberg

The tour continues to the St. Agatha Chapel on the Kristberg, a spiritual place with a special aura. The small church is located on a sunny high plateau - and is the oldest documented church in the Montafon. Even arriving there has a decelerating effect. In the quiet atmosphere of the chapel, surrounded by forests and gentle meadows, it becomes clear how important religion and rituals used to be in the everyday lives of miners and their families. The guided tour not only brings you closer to the architecture, but also opens up a view of the Montafon as a cultural resonance chamber.

After visiting the St. Agatha Chapel, we invite you to take a lunch break at the Panoramagasthof Kristberg - located right next to the chapel and with a magnificent view over the Silbertal valley. There will be time to meet and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. The meal is not included in the price and can be ordered individually à la carte. If you prefer to bring your own snack, you can arrange your own break and join us again later at the inn to continue the journey together.

Historic mine at Bartholomäberg

The third and deepest insight follows in the truest sense of the word: in the historic mine on the Bartholomäberg, you dive into the world underground. Equipped with a helmet and headlamp, you walk through narrow tunnels, follow the traces of the old ore mining and learn how closely technology, courage and the will to survive were interwoven in the Montafon. The mine is the oldest known of its kind in Vorarlberg and tells an impressive story of a world that shaped life in the valley for centuries.
