Safety of freeriders comes first

Fresh snow? Safety first!

It snowed heavily overnight - perfect conditions for your tour in the snow. But before you head off-piste, safety comes first! A look at the avalanche report is essential, as is the right equipment: an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are always a must.

But freeriding requires more than just the right equipment - above all responsibility. Stay within the permitted areas, assess the snow conditions correctly and respect nature. You can only really enjoy the deep snow if you are out and about consciously.

Winter sports off the slopes and trails:

What you should know.

Fresh powder slopes and snow-covered winter forests have a very special charm. However, they are not only a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts, but also the habitat of many wild animals. Especially in winter, their energy is precious - any unnecessary disturbance can become a burden for them.

You too can help to protect nature and its creatures: Stay on marked routes, avoid dense forest areas and respect quiet zones. This way you can enjoy the winter tranquillity without disturbing the delicate balance of wild animals.

Montafon: home of freerider Thomas Feurstein

Thomas Feurstein was born in 1991 in the Montafon market town of Schruns. He describes himself as a nature-loving adrenaline junkie - and as such still feels right at home in the deep snow of Vorarlberg. His freeride career began in 2015 as an "Austrian Freeride Master". He has been riding very successfully on the Freeride World Tour since 2017. He is currently the 2018 Freeride Vice World Champion on and off the slopes.

Freeride stronghold: Silvretta Montafon

Silvretta Montafon is a paradise for freeriders: endless deep snow slopes, varied descents and extensive off-piste terrain that often offers untracked runs for days after the last snowfall. In addition to the longest valley run in Vorarlberg and modern lift facilities, you can expect plenty of freeride experiences for the ultimate winter feeling:

At the Grasjoch you will find the Freeride Station, the meeting point for everyone who loves powder snow. Get tips from the pro team, exchange ideas with other freeriders or discover the terrain on a guided tour.

At the 4 OPEN FACES Freeride Contest*, international athletes show what is possible. It's no wonder that Silvretta Montafon is considered a stronghold for freeriding - with steep gullies and wide slopes.

So, if not here, then where?
