Montafon Brown Cattle

Until a few years ago, the Montafon brown cattle were threatened with extinction. Thanks to the commitment of young farmers in particular, the herds have been able to recover.

In summer, Sura Kees and full-cream alpine butter are made from the milk of the cows on the alpine dairy farms. The cow calves are mostly used for breeding. Brown Swiss cattle from the Montafon are renowned both at home and abroad, especially for the outstanding quality of the breeding animals.

Diversity in Montafon agriculture

The Montafon Brown Cattle breed is generally not very heavy and can therefore move easily in the mountains. The animals are undemanding and adaptable and are just as well suited for meat production as they are for milk production. In addition to Brown Cattle, Montafon straw pigs, dairy calves, cattle and meadow chickens are also kept. Occasionally, you may also encounter goats and even llamas.
