Sustainability

in Montafon tourism

We are proud to protect and carefully preserve our unique mountain and living environment. Our aim is to shape Montafon tourism in a year-round, quality-oriented way and to focus on development that combines ecological, economic and social sustainability.

What do we mean by sustainability?

For us, sustainability is more than just a buzzword. For us, it is about acting with the future in mind . We strive to find a balance between economic growth in the region, social prosperity and ecological responsibility.

Instead of always talking about sustainability, we prefer terms such as future-oriented, responsible or responsible and regenerative. These words underline our commitment to bringing about long-term, sustainable and positive change. They reflect our efforts not only to meet the needs of today's generation, but also to lay the foundations for a future worth living.

By focusing on these principles, we want to ensure that our activities actively contribute to the regeneration and improvement of our environment and community.

How do we understand sustainable development?

The Montafon is both a tourist destination and a living space. We therefore bear responsibility for all current and future residents of the valley, whether temporary or permanent.

In order to achieve our goal of becoming a true model region for sustainable tourism, we would therefore like to include all user groups of the Montafon and their aspects in the development process in order to achieve holistic development. In this context, "holistic " is divided into the areas of environment, social affairs and economy . Various challenges have already arisen in all areas, which now need to be solved. At the same time, technical and social change should also be driven forward in a responsible and future-oriented manner.

With this in mind, we not only want to protect the climate, but also be open to change. A change of perspective and greater awareness should create a better quality of life for the people of Montafon and all guests. We see sustainable development as a regenerative process to which everyone can contribute.

The priority model states that the areas of ecology, social affairs and economy are not fundamentally equal, but that there is no social stability without the environment and nature and no economic stability without social stability. When the different levels of sustainability are pitted against each other, ecology always wins, which is why this is often the focus of public perception. Conversely, the economic stability of a region is important in order to promote social and ecological stability. So it always depends on the approach and the perspective.

What drives us?

Sustainable development is not only firmly anchored in our mission statement, but is also firmly anchored in a number of overarching tourism strategies such as Plan T (Master Plan for Tourism) of the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism, the Vorarlberg Tourism Strategy 2030 and the Montafon regional mission statement of the Montafon Stand.

What goals have we set ourselves?

With the help of the PIZ - Future Laboratory for Sustainable Tourism, which has also taken over the coordination of the certification process for the Austrian Ecolabel, we are developing the Montafon into a real model region for sustainable tourism. In order to achieve our long-term goals, we have developed an action plan that will not only pave the way for recertification in 2028, but also define clear measures to shape tourism in our region in a future-oriented way.

More about the eco-label

We are also guided by theSustainable Development Goals(or SDGs). We have assigned these to the three areas of environment, social affairs and economy and added information on how the Montafon contributes to the individual goals and where our priorities lie.
