Where colors tell stories. Discover change. Enjoy vastness.
When the light turns golden and the forests glow in warm tones, the time for enjoyable hikes and clear thoughts begins.
When the light softens and the mountains glow in warm colors, your Montafon autumn begins. A time when nature comes to rest - and we with it. After the last cattle drive down from the Alps, paths open up for quiet hikes, for encounters with locals and for consciously experiencing the little things: the soft crackling of leaves, the scent of damp wood, the warmth of a cozy parlor.
Now the Montafon reveals its quiet depths - earthy, clear and close.
An autumn that doesn't have to be loud to be memorable.
When nature speaks in warm colors
Autumn brings tranquillity to the landscape, but not a break. The clear air, stable weather conditions and colorful trails make the Montafon particularly worth experiencing now.
Whether on the slopes, through the forest or over wide mountain ranges. You are out and about, without the hustle and bustle, but with a great feeling for your surroundings. A time of year when you want to be outside - because every step feels right.
Hiking pleasure in the fall

Autumn paths that have a lasting effect
Walking changes in the fall: The paths are quieter, the thoughts clearer. You walk more slowly - not because you have to, but because it feels good. On warm-colored paths past crackling leaves and open views, the Montafon Alpine mosaic shows itself from its quietest side.
Hiking in the MontafonAlpine mosaic
Especially in the fall, nature in the Montafon is like a mosaic. Four very different adventure areas tell their own story - the quiet Verwall, the powerful Silvretta, the rich Rätikon and the lively valley.
When the forests are colored and the air is clear, the contrasts are even more intense. Here you can feel how lively diversity can be and how close the mountains come to you.

When the fall gets going
You can also explore the Montafon by bike in the fall. As long as the weather cooperates, many trails show their most impressive side. The clear air, bright colors and quiet trails make every ride special.
(E-)Biking in Montafon

Bike & Hike
Ride your bike to the alpine pasture, then continue on foot—this combination is particularly appealing in autumn. The trails are emptier, the colors more intense, the air clearer. Bike & Hike combines the best of both worlds: you can easily reach more remote starting points in the saddle and then climb to the summit at your own pace. The route stays behind and you are completely at one with yourself again, step by step.
Bike-Kodex
When nature prepares for winter, we need to be considerate—not only of hikers, but also of wildlife. Wild animals are often out and about at dusk, searching for food. On a bike, you are fast and quiet, but this can scare animals. The Vorarlberg Bike Code shows what is important: mindful riding, clear paths, and respectful coexistence. This ensures that the experience remains safe for everyone – even at a time when the mountains are becoming quieter.
Tips for considerate biking in the fall
- Avoid riding at dusk
- Always stay on marked trails
- Pay attention to wildlife rest areas and protected areas
- Expect wild animals at all times
Culture in fall
History in the valley
When it gets cooler and quieter outside, museums and exhibitions open their doors. Between old parlors, mining history and traditions, you will discover the Montafon from a different perspective. Culture in autumn means getting to know the everyday life of people in the past and at the same time getting a feel for the present.
When the animals come down from the Alps...
The time of the cattle drives has begun.
For centuries, cattle have been spending the summer in the high alpine pastures of the Montafon.
The procession of decorated animals—including sheep, goats, and donkeys, known as “Piefl”—is greeted with food and drink, and in some places with musical accompaniment. The exact date of the cattle drives depends on the weather. If snow falls early, they may be brought forward at short notice.

Looking forward to winter

From golden leaves to white snow
When the last leaves come off, it's not far away: the slopes in the Montafon will soon be transformed into a winter paradise.
The first cable cars open at the end of November and the season begins - with freshly groomed slopes, vast expanses of snow and moments that only winter can give. Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing then take center stage again. A seamless transition - from quiet paths in the fall to clear lines in the snow, from golden days to glistening slopes.
If you want to experience winter in the Montafon, you can already feel the anticipation.
